A major problem with the country’s education system is how well kids are trained to hate math. Math is the most straight-forward subject in the world. It transcends the ambiguities of language and communication. It is fact.
Math is progressive and practical. It is all about combining simple, obvious facts to create slightly more complex and interesting facts. At the end of the day, even the most complicated of mathematical concepts is just a whole bunch of multiplication and addition.
We have all heard the declarations and excuses: “Oh, I hate math”…”I can’t do math”…”I’m not a math person”…blah blah blah
While I do not expect high school students to be deriving Navier-Stokes equations for non-Newtonian fluids containing high-energy radiation sources, no one should be learning how to find the slope of a line for the first time in college.
Note: I am not referring to those who have never had access to quality math instruction. I am only referring to people who have had opportunities to learn math and elected not to—those who have chosen to be ignorant of math out of apathy.
This repulsion from math is indicative of a lack of mental discipline, and reflects poorly upon the logical capabilities of our culture.
